Goa is a popular travel destination in India, known for its beautiful beaches, rich history, and vibrant nightlife. Many tourists flock to Goa during the Christmas season, attracted by the promise of warm weather, a festive atmosphere, and a break from the cold winter back home. I recently had the opportunity to travel to Goa during the Christmas season, and in this article, I will share my honest experience of the trip.
Getting There
I traveled to Goa from New Delhi by plane, which took around 2 hours. The airport in Goa was small but efficient, and I was able to quickly collect my luggage and head to my hotel. However, I did notice that the airport was quite crowded, and it took some time to get through immigration and security. It was clear that many other travelers had the same idea of spending Christmas in Goa.
Accommodation
I stayed in a budget hotel in Calangute, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Goa. The hotel was clean and comfortable, with basic amenities such as air conditioning, a TV, and a hot shower. However, the hotel was located on a busy street, and the noise from traffic and nightlife made it difficult to sleep at night. Additionally, the hotel staff was not very helpful or friendly, which made the overall experience somewhat disappointing.
Beaches
One of the main attractions of Goa is its beautiful beaches, and I was eager to explore them. However, I quickly realized that the beaches were extremely crowded, with tourists and locals alike vying for space on the sand. It was difficult to find a quiet spot to relax, and the noise from music and vendors was constant.
The beaches themselves were stunning, with crystal-clear water and soft sand. However, I did notice a significant amount of litter on the beaches, which detracted from the beauty of the environment. It was clear that the influx of tourists during the Christmas season had put a strain on the local infrastructure, and the waste management system was struggling to keep up.
Nightlife
Goa is famous for its vibrant nightlife, and I was excited to experience it for myself. I visited a few nightclubs and bars in Calangute and Baga and was impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of the crowds. The music was loud and the drinks were flowing, and it was clear that everyone was in a festive mood.
However, I did notice that the nightlife scene was quite rowdy, with many people drinking to excess and behaving in a disrespectful manner. The police presence was minimal, and it seemed as though anything went in the name of having a good time. Additionally, I was constantly approached by vendors and touts, trying to sell me everything from drugs to souvenirs.
Food
Goa is known for its delicious cuisine, with a blend of Indian, Portuguese, and international flavors. I tried a variety of dishes during my stay, from fresh seafood to spicy curries to sweet desserts. The food was generally tasty and affordable, and I enjoyed the opportunity to try new things.
However, I did notice that the hygiene standards were not always up to par. Many of the restaurants and street vendors did not seem to have proper sanitation practices, and I was wary of getting sick. Additionally, the amount of waste generated by the food industry was significant, with plastic cutlery and packaging being used in abundance.
Culture and History
Goa has a rich history and culture, with many beautiful churches, temples, and monuments to explore. I visited the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and was awed by its intricate architecture and history. I also visited the local markets and shops, where I was able to purchase unique souvenirs and crafts.
